So I don't know exactly when the second trimester of pregnancy technically starts, but since I'll be 14 weeks tomorrow I know I'm either in the second trimester or will be tomorrow. YAY! Hopefully I'll start getting some energy soon, but I'm not holding my breath on that one since I've heard that doesn't happen as much with twin pregnancies. It'd also be nice if this stupid heartburn would tone down, but I doubt that will happen either. Oh well. I'm just going to enjoy being pregnant and not worry about things like that.
I had another OB appointment on Monday. It was my "long" appointment, but it was only about 15 minutes, so I can only imagine how short the others are going to be. It was a lot like a normal annual- they did a pap smear and took some cultures- but then she also did a quick ultrasound to look for the babies' heartbeats. She said it was too early to be able to hear both of them since the babies are still so close together so she just looked quickly with the ultrasound. Both hearts are still beating strongly.
Not too much else has been going on. Ben and I have started talking about looking for daycare, but haven't done much more than that. We've looked at furniture, but haven't picked anything out. Oh, we did get an e-mail the other day from Ben's cousin and he offered us a bunch of baby stuff since he and his wife are done having kids. We don't know exactly what they have, but we'll probably take as much as they want to give us, other than clothes. He did say that they have two matching bassinets, so we'll probably get those. That'll be nice since I'd been wondering what the babies were going to sleep in when they first come home. Now we won't have to buy something for them to sleep in...
We've also started looking online for a car for me. I'm not sure what I want, but I think I'm going to try to get my dad to come down next weekend and go test drive cars with me.
We're also refinancing our house. We figured that would be a good way to save some money each month, so we're doing that. We close on February 7th. The appraiser was here today and he said that the amount of money we need should not be a problem. It better not be since it's less than what we paid for this house 4 years ago!
We've started the process of cleaning stuff out of our house. I don't know how long that process is going to take, but at least we've started. We need to work on cleaning out Ashtree's room, but I don't know what to do with all of the crap that's in there right now.
My mom and I are going shopping tomorrow! I only have a few pairs of pants that I can still wear comfortably, so I decided that it's time to go buy some maternity pants. I'm not really showing, but my fat belly is getting bigger. I can also see where my uterus is starting to bulge. I can't wait for it to get bigger!

1/17/08 Appointment
We went to the high risk doctor on Thursday for an ultrasound. This was our second trip to the high risk doctor for this same ultrasound, but the first time the babies weren't cooperating and the ultrasound tech couldn't get the measurements she needed. It went a lot better this week. The babies were hanging out sitting facing one another, as you can see in these pictures.
The tech changed over to the 4-D ultrasound machine for a few minutes because she thought she'd be able to get some good shots of the babies with it, but it didn't look as good as she expected. Here are the 4-D pictures she gave us.
The ultrasound tech was able to get all of the measurements she needed this time. And we got to see some neat things. At one point one of the babies held up its hand and we could see all five of its fingers. Then the tech got a nice shot of one of their spines and you could see all of the vertebrae and even the ribs coming off of it. It was so amazing!
We're going to get plenty of opportunities to see these little ones during this pregnancy. We go back to the high risk doctor for another ultrasound in 4 weeks and then we start to go for ultrasounds every 2 weeks after that. They're going to start checking my cervix at the next appointment and then in that and the subsequent appointments, they'll be checking the babies to make sure they're about the same size and that one isn't stealing nutrients from the other one. They'll also be checking the levels of amniotic fluid in each of the sacks to make sure they're even, too. Our appointment in 8 weeks (March 13) is our level II ultrasound, which is the one where we can find out the gender, if we decide to.
We went and looked at more baby furniture this weekend. We found one furniture set we liked, but we have to compare it to what we saw at Babies R Us and figure out what we want to get. We also need to do some figuring of how we're going to arrange everything in the nursery. It's going to be a tight fit, but we'll figure it out. We've got a lot of things to figure out in the next several months...

Our new OB is great!
We had our first appointment with a new OB today. It went great! Everything about it was so much better than our appointment with the midwife a few weeks ago. The office was nicer, the nurse was competent and the doctor was awesome! We only had to wait a few minutes to get called back and really the longest wait we had was 10 minutes waiting for the doctor.
The doctor took us into his office and talked to us for about 20 minutes. He answered all of our questions (I had a list) and kind of told us how things would go. Then we went into an exam room and he did an ultrasound. He started with an abdominal ultrasound and it was amazing to actually be able to see the babies that way! That was my first ever abdominal ultrasound. We could see both of them, but couldn't see them all that clearly, so he moved on to a vaginal ultrasound. One of the first things we saw on the vaginal ultrasound was the membrane separating the twins. That was so awesome to see! I think the three of us (Dr, me and Ben) all breathed a sigh of relief when we saw that come up. This pregnancy got a lot lower risk as soon as we saw that membrane. Thank goodness!
We got some good looks at the babies. One of them was flipping around and kicking and waving its arms. The other was just hanging out. They actually look like babies now! They're both measuring perfectly. They're 4.5 and 4.8 centimeters from crown to rump. We could see their heads, arms and legs pretty clearly. We could even see their spines and the jaw of the one that was moving around. That would showed us a pretty clear profile, but I think the other was facing away from us. I go back in a couple of weeks for a physical and then we'll start going to them every 4 weeks for awhile.
The doctor did tell me to let work know that after 24 weeks, I'm his. He hopes that I'll be able to work well after that, but at that point I need to be prepared at any point to be taken out of work, have to cut down my hours or to be put on bedrest. I told Chris and John that and I think they're okay with it. They just want everything to go well with this pregnancy and these babies.
I made the announcement at work today. John was really excited that I was going to tell people today, so he called everyone into the conference room and we made the announcement. Everyone was really excited. John is even ready to start planning my baby shower. Now I just need to tell all of my friends that I haven't told yet... Maybe I'll do that tonight.
